ARTIST STATEMENT
The work created for this exhibition is about inner places and the journey the soul makes from the physical world to the realm of the spirit while finding a balance in the paradoxes life presents. These images combine traditional printmaking methods that have been used for centuries such as woodcuts, etching, and monotypes, along with 21st century digital photography.
I layer woodcuts, etchings, and monotypes with digital photography images. I use photographs of places that are mystical to me. I also use dresses in my work, the dress representing the soul. This concept is taken from the Zohar (a collection of Judaic mystical writings). The Zohar states that you cannot see the soul but you can see the garments of the soul. Most of the images have many layers travelling from a dense physical reality to the open realm of spirituality.
This work is the soul’s journey through place.
