Merill Comeau
February 3-24 2012
Merill is a mixed media artist examining themes of decline, regeneration and bloom. Merill uses fabric and materials from clothing and other objects that has been discarded after being used for many years by different people in her life: "I often know the donor of the materials I use and I think of them as I deconstruct, reconstruct, paint and print on their scraps. My pieces are collaged and then drawn on with thread". Merill's pieces are made with fabric for many reasons: the fabric is imbued with memory and represents class and identity. She is also referencing consumer culture and the globalization of manufacturing.
" In my use of recycled clothing and of sewing construction I pay homage to the history of women patching together salvaged bits of fabric to make quilts". - Merill Comeau
