Richard Neal

May 2012

Richard Neal is a painter and sculptor from Centerville, MA working at Chalkboard Studio in Barnstable Village. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from UMass Dartmouth and a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts from the Cranbrook Academy of Art. While at art school his concentration was in sculpture and he also has a background in carpentry and construction, so there is an inevitable sculptural element to the work he creates.
He likes the physical element of collage, working directly from the figure, making images of ripped paper and drawing materials so that “the finished work often looks like the wind blew the pieces, like the papers just sort of swirled into place.”
"I am interested in piecing together images from the rather mundane materials that whirl around us. People and things are in a never-ending condition of pulling together and breaking apart and I have tried in my work to reflect some element of that continual state of flux."
Please join us for the opening reception and meet Richard Neal in person on Friday May 4, 2012, 5-8pm
